The last Will and testament of ROBERT McLAIN was produced to court for probate Whereupon JOSEPH WOOD one of the subscribing witnesses thereto made Oath that he saw the said ROBERT McLAIN sign & seal & h d him publish and declare the same to be his last Will and testament and that he was at the time of publishing the same of sound and perfect mind and memory to the best of his knowledge and belief and that he saw William Comsslaind sign his name as a concurring thereto, which Will is ordered to be recorded and is in these words, to wit--
"In the name of God Amen, I ROBERT McLAIN of the county of Knox farmer being in a low state of health but in perfect mind and memory thanks be given unto God calling unto mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men Once to die - do make and ordain this my last will and testament that is to say - principally and first of all. I give and recommend my soul unto the hand of Almighty God that gave it and my body I recommend to the Earth to be buried in Decent Christian burial at the Discretion of my Executors nothing doubting but at the General Resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God and as touching such worldly estate, wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life, I give Devine and dispose of the same in the following manner and form - First I give and bequeath to ANN my dearly beloved wife all my property during her life or widowhood. I also give to my well beloved son JOSEPH five shillings
also to my well beloved daughter SARAH five shillings and
also to my well beloved son ANDREW five shillings, and
also to my well beloved son JOHN five shillings and
also to my well beloved son STEPHEN five shillings and
also to my well beloved son WILLIAM five shillings,
also to my well beloved Daughter MARY a bed & furniture one cow and wheel to be at her disposal whenever she thinks proper
and if my wife should incline to marry, I desire her to have this bed and furniture and wearing cloas and if not at her death to be made a sale and the whole of the Estate to be equally divided to my three youngest children JAMES DAVID, CHAS and MARGARET. I also do desire my loving wife ANN and son JOSEPH McLAIN to be my only Executors and I do hereby utterly disallow revoke and disannul all and every other former testament will legacy bequeath and Executors by me in anyways before named Willed and bequeathed, satisfying and confirming this and no Other to be my last Will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty-first day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred & Six. ROBERT X McLAIN Signed sealed in the presents of us. April session 1808. Statement of sales of estate of ROBERT McLAIN, signed by I. McLAIN, administrator. ----------------------------------- NOTE: Ann was Robert's second wife and given the wording of his will she is probably the mother of the three youngest children in as much as they are listed separate from the older children whose mother would have been Robert's first wife.

John SAVAGE
John Savage was the first school teacher in Cooper County in 1813. The School was about one mile east of Boonville on Lilly's branch and about half a mile from the mouth of that creek. There were fifteen pupils including Benjamin Bolin, Delany Bolin, William Bolin, Hiram Savage, William Savage, Hess Warden and William Warden. The History of Cooper County (1883) notes that the pupils set on a log in the open air, their being no school house. Classes were suspended after a month because of Indian Attacks. He married Cassandra Stephens. They had 4 children: twins Bolin and James Robins born 28 Oct 1826, Greenbury born 1830, and Nancy A. born 1835.

James SAVAGE
He was the first minister in the Pleasant Hill area. He lived on the Little Blue, where he built a water mill. Savage's mill was located south of Independence on the middle channel of Little Blue Creek. James Savage did most of the preaching for some years, aided by his nephews Hiram and Savage and William B. Savage. The first church in this area was constituted by the Baptists in June 1832. James Savage was the first pastor. He married Winefred Williams on 28 Aug 1808 in Baron Co, KY. They had 3 children: Rebecca, Britton and Elizabeth. He married second Mary Polly Stephens on 30 Jan 1817 in Baron Co, KY. They had 8 children: Keizel, David, John Thomas, James W., Robert, Thomas R., Mary Polly and Andrew W.
